Women

Women

June 11, 2019

I had begun writing this a few weeks ago, but tonight I was able to find the right words. I spent the evening writing with my friend, Kim. Before we put our heads down to work at our favorite neighborhood bar, we caught up over a glass of wine. We hadn’t seen each other in a couple of weeks but it felt like an eternity. We talked about everything we had been doing and where our lives were. I told her how I had met someone and that he was hands down the most wonderful man I’d ever been involved with. Sitting across the table from me, she smiled and tears sprung to her eyes. That is what I love most about my girlfriends. I am so blessed and it was easy to find the words to finish this.

We will save the world.

~

The world believes men are stronger
because they wage wars.
But women kiss each other on the cheek
to hello and goodbye.
We rally around each other
no matter how irrational the cause.
We unabashedly cry for each other
in sadness and happiness.
We gasp in awe at every twist and turn
of that story saved just for our ears
while sipping coffee or tea or wine together.
We pass giggles, toilet paper, and thank yous
to strangers under bathroom stalls.
Tell me now how men will save the world
with weapons and handshakes
and nods of their heads in passing.
While men exchange words and fists,
we give away love and peace and tampons
to anyone who needs us.
